Improve your Odds of Having a Successful Restaurant

For anyone thinking of entering into the restaurant business, be careful! Restaurants open up all the time but very few of them make it into the second year before going out of business. Competition is fierce and the market saturated. But, if you think you have the next big idea in restaurants, here are a few ideas to help make sure you succeed.

Location should be the prime factor in your restaurant palnning. Definitely find an area that will have a lot of pedestrian and automobile traffic. Make sure, however, that there aren't a bunch of similar restaurants huddled in this area. Chain restaurants tend to have extensive advertising budgets and can overshadow your marketing efforts. Take time to analyze any location, especially if it has another restaurant that is similar to yours in food, price,and other attributes.

PUt your customer service standards as a top priority. You pay for what you get. Don't be cheap when it comes to service. Incentives for staff members work well such as gathering tips to increase everyone's pay. This helps promote staff satisfaction and enjoyment. If you have any staff members that are not willing to share their tips, then don't hire them.

You need to be especially cognizant of your efficiency at the beginning when you don't have much money. If you are inefficient you have a greater chance of failure. Little things add up such as wasting food, condiments, and staff time. These items decrease your overall profits. Owning a restaurant is difficult because only marginal profit gains can be expected even when the restaurant is doing well. The key is to have efficient data collection. This will help you to pin down negative factors quickly and correct them in a timely manner.

Customers form a standard about your restaurant food, service, and general experience. Make sure to provide them with a consistent, warm experience so they will return many times in the coming weeks. To do this, you need to focus on the details of training, food ingredients, and food preparation. If you are trying out a different quality of ingredients, do it in a special or new dish. Don't mess with the old, trusted entrees that customers expect. Test the new ingredients and if they are success you can add the new dish to your regular menu.

If you are serious about opening up your own restaurant, you had better have a passion for the business. The long hours and cutthroat competition will take its toll on you. If this is just an investment, then reconsider going with stocks or mutual funds. They cause far fewer headaches.

Finally, originality is an absolute must (of course I am assuming that you have good food or else, well...). There are thousands of restaurants out there and the ones that break into the market and make it are those that come along with a new idea. Maybe this is in menu selection but more often than not, it has more to do with atmosphere and ambiance. Do not be afraid of being bold and adventurous when planning your theme and menu items. People crave things that are different.

A restaurant is a very difficult business to run and even harder to turn a profit out of. You have to watch every dime carefully and destroy waste with a passion. But, with a great location, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and some bold ideas, you have every chance of turning that great idea into the next big thing in the restaurant business!
