Leash Training Puppy Techniques You Can Learn

By: Dog Training Diva

When it comes to the process of puppy training, most people are willing to try a variety of different methods before they discover one that is completely successful for them. One of the things that has enjoyed a great deal of popularity in recent years has been the head collar as a method of leash training a puppy.

The head collar is a type of collar that slips over the puppy's muzzle and neck; then it is attached to a lead. The collar restrains the puppy, but still allows plenty of room to eat, drink, bark and open the mouth. This leash training method is ideal for the puppy because if you apply pressure, the head collar tightens and closes the puppy's mouth, thereby further restraining him or her.

This head collar is designed for leash training puppy applications. It's ideal because the collar is wrapped around the neck even if the muzzle slips off the dog's snout. The collar on the neck will still be there to serve as a restraint and a back up device of sorts. Head collars help teach dogs to react instinctively to muzzle pressure.

If you use a head collar for leash training puppy, this will show him or her that you are the boss quickly and easily. You will then have more time for other things. Dog trainers often use this type of head collar because it corrects behavior in an entirely new way instead of using normal corrections. Head collars are also great when you are leash training a puppy that is more aggressive; the loop around the muzzle gives you a reliable extra measure of protection.

When leash training puppy, during the process there are also other advantages to using a head collar. Head collars are simple to use and make puppy training easy because you don't need to use painful or threatening corrections, but still can get great results. In addition, if a puppy has problems pulling on the leash while you're walking, this collar will help deter them from doing so.

There are many different puppy training situations besides leash training where a head collar can be used to great advantage, including with distractions to the puppy's training. With the head collar, other puppies can be ignored during training because you can keep control of the situation when you work with your puppy.

Keep in mind that a head collar has some disadvantages. One is that a puppy can become dependent on the collar if you use it to control his or her behavior as a matter of course. If you should switch to a traditional collar after that point, bad behavior could become a problem. Some puppies also do not like the head collar and might try very hard to get it off. This could make your dog hurt him- or herself if he or she tries to remove the collar in the wrong way.

It is important to be an informed puppy trainer when it comes to the head collar, otherwise you may make poor decisions on how to use the collar for your puppy. The head collar is not a muzzle and should always still offer full movement of the mouth. Luckily, the pros with products like these outweigh the cons and if you are willing to learn how to use this head collar correctly for puppy training you will prosper.
