Mission-Critical Applications and the Public Internet

By: Rob Metras

Cost savings have been realized and the growth of computing power, the likes of which Fortune 50 companies had ,is now available to even small enterprises today. Adding to the decreasing cost of hardware and software there has also been an increase in internet related applications. This too is a function of the expansion and appearance of high speed internet access in the developed world. These trends have enabled more to be done with less and increased productivity.

The internet is providing the means for a wide variety of business activities such as transaction processing, email, and file backup to occur. There has been a growth of intercompany Virtual Private Networks which can span the city, or the globe. People today are using fax, voice as well as video communication which all runs over the public internet.

The impact of the net has been profoundacross society. New types of communication such as social networking and internet messaging have emerged and are mainstream. Today's internet savvy individual can call someone on Skype at no cost wherever they are in the world. This means a rapid reshaping of the public telephone landscape.

The challenge in running your business or mission critical applications is the fact that all internet connections are created equally. One can have the problem of old cabling and underground cable for the last mile to your operation. In this area all providers are not created equally or over the same time frame. It is wise to diversify your last mile connections to give your much more reliability and protection.

fYou are at risk for packet loss or diminished voice communications if you are running all your traffic over the same internet or voice over internet protocol connection. Web browsing, email, file transfer and backup applications are built to operate if the connection is mostly stable. The same cannot be said for voice which requires no packet loss or dropped connections. It is wise to consider alternatives such as point-to-point connections to give you maximum flexibility and quality of service.

All carriers are not the same, as well as all service and connections. Diversify your efforts by using the cost reductions technology has provided you to give you enhanced security and access.
