Rbd: From Beginning To Now

By: Jason Lancaster

Television is not only important in Mexico; it is a vital part of Mexican culture. Soap opera producers try many things to connect with their viewers. Consider the Mexican soap opera Rebelde, which is an adaptation of the Argentine soap opera Rebelde Way. In 2004, Rebelde's producer had an idea to expand the storylines and develop the connection between the characters and viewers. The idea was to create the musical group RBD.

The popularity of the band soon exceeded that of the soap opera. As the television audience became fans of the band, they wanted to hear RBD's music more than watching the show. The show aired for three seasons only: 2004, 2005, and 2006. A new television series emerged to document the life of RBD and its members: Maite Perroni, Anah, Cristopher Uckermann, Dulce Mara, Alfonso Herrera, and Christian Chvez. The first season of RBD - La Familia, which means RBD - The Family, has thirteen chapters about the band's life which include: the personal life of each member, recording in the studio, the concerts and backstage.

The group has already recorded albums in three different languages including Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The band's greatest success has been in Brazil, but they have followers from around the world. The band is known in almost all of Latin America except Argentina, where they still have not released any albums. The most surprising thing about the group is the amount of awards they have been nominated for and won in the four years they have been in the music industry.

They were nominated for "Best Latin Artist on the World" and "Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal" in the World Music Awards and Latin Grammy Awards, respectively. They have won the titles "Best Duo or Group" and "Melhor Banda Internacional" (Best International Band) in Brazil. Out of the twenty-one nominations in the Premios Juventud (Young People's Awards), they won seventeen.

Nominated for awards in thirteen different categories in the Billboard Latin Music Awards, RBD has won such awards as: "Tour Generacin 2006" for Latin Tour of the Year, "Solo Qudate en Silencio" (Just Stay in Silence) for Latin Pop Airplay Song of the Year - Duo or Group, and "Rebelde" (Rebel) and "Celestial" for Latin Pop Album of the Year 2006 and 2007.

The fourth most sold out tour in Mexico was "Tour Generacin RBD" following The Cure, Britney Spears, and The Backstreet Boys.

RBD has surpassed their beginnings. Although they were initially created to promote a soap opera, they have already accomplished many things within the music industry. With such potential, they should continue to succeed in this industry, winning many more awards that they definitely deserve. Merely writing about such great band has been fun!
